Wishing On Vega

‘Wishing on Vega’ is an interactive art installation, in which the audience can emerge themselves into the piece. A box (inspired by the idea of Pandora’s Box) is the control panel for the lights beneath the participant. As they play with the lights, a night sky is projected overhead (programmed via Processing). The night sky has shooting stars (1/100 chance) set off when one of the two sensor is triggered. The participant— if too preoccupied with the event at hand, would miss the shooting star. However, if they are aware and observing all aspects, they will be able to see it shoot across the room.

The piece is a comment on being to preoccupied with day to day tasks, instead of looking at the bigger picture. Vega is one of the brightest stars discovered, and was the first to be photographed. It is believed to be the second most important star (1st is the sun). Vega’s brightness dims every so often, and is present in many cultures. It is also referred to the “messenger of light”, which was the inspiration to use light as the focal point of the piece. As well, the installation date of the piece happened on April 20th, which was the time of the Vega meteoroid shower (shooting stars).

The Pi Bakery

“The Pi Bakery” visualizes the number Pi in a new and interactive way. Instead of looking at the decimal points as a connected list, the numbers were given brief individualized display. Through the use of colour and size the the core ideas of Pi was represented. Pi is a number that does not have any pattern or repetition; it is an irrational number that is used to find the area of a circle. Inspired by these points, The Pi Bakery has no circles with the same size and colour.

The main concept is meant to look at visualizing Pi in a nonconventional way. The colour changing represents the fact that Pi has no repetition, each shade of colour shown is a unique blend of numbers in the sequence which reflects the components of RGB. The size represents the fact that Pi can find the area of any circle, regardless how big or small. Lastly, the circles reflect how Pi is utilized in the measurement/drawing/exploration of circles.

The data was used to generate the colour of each circle based on RGB. Every column of pi was used; the first 3 numbers representing the red, the next 3 representing green, the next blue, and finally the 10th number changes the shape size. This process repeats going down each row of our CSV file. The colour of the fill changes as it runs through the counter making continuous unique circle.

This project is a processing program used to explore human nature; more specifically the theory of in groups and groupthink displayed through a projection. I am using a program to create generative art inspired by a psychological theory so that this behaviour can be viewed in a more visual and numerical way. It speaks to the concept of in and out groups through the actions and behaviours of the objects (circles) in the program which resemble the characteristics of people’s ideas and it’s ability to spread when in an in-group situation.

The project is generative art reflecting psychological and sociological behaviours of humans. Psychologist have found that ingroup identification can result in negative attitudes toward outgroups. As well, ingroup bias can form while ideas not inline with the core beliefs of the group can be overthrown.

Through my program I will be reflecting the behaviour of how like minded-people group and either hurt, persuade, or help outgroups. The end result of the program demonstrates this social phenomenon. Generating a small society of circles that showcasing the effects of the psychological theory of in groups vs out groups allows the audience to reflect on real-life situations.The behaviour of the circles running in the program display how real world people behave in in-groups. The outcome will show how one leader can group people together to fight a common cause, and how one leader with the wrong intentions can hurt the population.

The reason behind my work is the recent results of the american election. I often hear ‘how did this happen’ and ‘what can we do’. My piece does not answer these questions in particular, but explores the answer and allows the audience to interrupt and generate their own ideas and answers from the influence of the programs outcome. My strategy to get this done is to have a personal timeline for each step of the way. For example, have circles on the screen, how circles with collision detection, add ingroup characteristics etc.

This work relates to generative art as the program runs and generates visuals and behaviours that I can not predict outside of the parameters I have given the object. The program will generate the outcome and become the creator of the end result.  The art piece that originally inspired me to create my work was one shown in class. Casey Reas’ created a program in which circles or arrows follow certain instructions and parameters.

I used the scale as the citizens are collected, the group as a whole will get larger and contrast/emphasize the individuals and smaller groups. Also my work will demonstrate transposition; making real life human behaviour displayed virtually and visually.

 

Characteristics outlined:

In-groups: A circle is created that groups the ‘people’ together based on something they share in common. They then stay in this group forming ties.

Size of the circle represents: How strong their opinion is

Colour of circle: The opinion they have

Behaviour: If Circle A ‘talks’ (meets) with Circle B, the circle with the stronger opinion will change the opinion of the other.

If they already have the same opinion they can form another separate group together or stay with the original group.

Example: A meets B. There is a 37% chance that a person will be influenced by another impacting them greatly. Considering the strength of their opinion/influence, the colours will change

Program Displays:

-When one ‘meets’ someone similar to them, the one they interact with changes their colour to match the approacher, however if the approacher meets someone with a stronger idea, their colour would change and they would break off, then spreading the new (stronger) opinion

-When people were forced together into groups in which they had little freedom to leave, their options shifty to those whom are around them in order to not be outcasted. Some with strong opinions stayed in the group but most times it only had 2 different colours

-When the two leaders collided, the majority of the group would change their opinion to the one that showed stronger opinion, however those with small opinions/ideas, stayed with the original idea/person because they were closest to the middle of the circle and were not being able to be exposed to new ideas

-Forced grouping ends up isolating other ideas, and therefore no one comes to common grounds freely

-The groups will have a strong variety of opinions at the beginning but eventually the smaller ideas fade out

-The ‘people’ with smaller ideas do not have a chance to hear the other groups opinions

Outside the box.

‘Outside the box’ was created in the winter of 2016, consisting of a small seven inch robot equipped with markers to leave a trail of a coloured path behind it on a white paper flooring. Using a simple wall-detection program, it is able to move in random paths while avoiding collision with walls or other objects in the space.

This project was created to represent the feeling of ‘writers block’ in which an artists feels as though they cannot think creatively or as though they are going in circles. The robotics aesthetics is meant to be as though a child had created it, in order to represent the inner child artist. The piece is a visual representation of this experience through the behaviour of the robot. The robot’s movement shows the pathways of thought when one is attempting to think outside the conventional box of ideas. The robots random drawn paths generates art that is different every time the robot is turned on, showing that each person’s path is different.

To sum up, the project is a robot that creates a colourful, yet non-consistent path, to illustrate the creative process an artist takes in order to make a project.

This photograph was taken in 2012. It was one of my original favourite photographs, and I thought I had lost it. Thank goodness for back up USBs. I once tried to recreate it, going back to the same location, same tree, but the lighting was never right. The little leaves never looked as perky as they did in this original.

Artist Statement

My design choice was to do a CD Album cover for a rock band from the 90s called ‘The Cranberries’. Viewing their pervious album art covers, I noticed the consistent use of a textured rough font and decided to keep to the same style. I used the ‘PWScratchy Medium’ from dafont.com then added a drop shadow to make the characters have depth. The image I created was first hand drawn then scanned into photoshop to be filled in. I coloured outside of the lines to make it look rocky and rugged. The outfits I chose were based off their styles in their music videos and photo shoots. To contrast the black and white background and suits, I used the complementary colours of yellow and blue for the leads singers clothing.

I then aligned the text to the edge of the drawings on both sides to give the cover balance. Lastly I used my photograph of an old wall with paint cracks for the background. This was the most difficult part because I found it challenging to get the right background texture. I chose it to reflect back to one of their music videos for the song ‘Zombies’. To make the photograph background not be the centre of attention, I used a inner shadow and a small filter blur. I learned that less is more when it comes to backgrounds and it should be enhancing the imagery instead of distracting from it.
